After much casual talk about a trip to watch the Formula 1, the journey to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2023 at Yas Marina Circuit was finally booked on April 3rd. The countdown has begun; 234 days until departure with a great group of colleagues!

Thursday morning

It’s Thursday morning. The temperature is -4 degrees, but the suitcases are packed with summer clothes. Two cars drive from Kongsberg to Gardermoen, and a plane is on its way from Trondheim. Finally, the day we’ve been waiting for over half a year has arrived! The course is set southeast towards the United Arab Emirates. Seven hours on Emirates Boeing 777-300ER await. This is the world’s largest twin-engine jet, with GE90-115B engines, among other things, that we supply Booster Fixation Shroud and Cone Shaft to. A little fun fact: We also have a contract for the Tube Support Ring for this engine, but it is produced by a subcontractor named Mecachrome. Mecachrome is also the supplier of the engines used in Formula 2, a 3.4-liter V6 turbocharged engine producing 620hp.

The schedule is packed with racing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We arrive at the track around 11 on Friday. The temperature is now 29 degrees, and it’s brilliantly sunny! We quickly realize that these are temperatures Norwegian bodies are not used to dealing with in daily life. The first thing that will happen is the practice for Formula 2. We actually have a Norwegian in the field: Dennis Hauger. For four of us, this is the first time we experience F1 and F2 live, and what a sound when the first cars come driving by! It’s a peculiar raspy sound, followed by a loud and distinct exhaust bang when shifting gears. Earplugs are definitely an advantage, even though we sit up in the stands with a fair distance to the cars on the track.

After the F2 practice, there’s a break before anything else happens on the track. Fridays during race weekends are usually quite calm, with few spectators present. We take the opportunity to explore the area around the track and come across “Pit Stop Practice.” Here, teams of 3 compete to change 1 wheel on an F1 car in the shortest possible time. Everyone gave it a shot except Magnar, who had the pleasure of being the cameraman. The best time turned out to be 4.4 seconds to unscrew and remove the wheel, put on and tighten a new one. This is about twice as long as F1 teams take. We also stumbled upon F1 simulator driving. Here, we had no practice, just straight into racing against other participants. This also went relatively well, with GKN employees in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th place out of 13 participants.

The day concluded with F1 practice and F2 qualifying, where “our own” Dennis Hauger ended up with the 6th starting position for Sunday’s main race. Certainly not a bad starting point! We returned to the hotel, where we decided to dine at the hotel’s Italian restaurant. The food was good, the portions were small, and the evening peaked when Kenneth’s money practically ran out of his wallet as he ordered a GT for “100 crazy people,” which is equivalent to about 300 Norwegian kroner. We all agreed that it had been a good start to the trip.

On Saturday, we decided to visit an amusement park, namely Ferrari World. The goal for the day: Ride the world’s fastest roller coaster. Unfortunately, it was closed due to technical problems when it opened, so we strolled around and looked at some of the cars from Ferrari’s glory days in F1 from 2000-2004. All our phones got quite a few more pictures to keep, and the guys were almost speechless with admiration as we walked around with wide eyes. Eventually, we moved on, and to everyone’s surprise, there is actually an indoor go-kart track in the amusement park! Given that all of us are part of the company’s go-kart sports team, there is no need for much persuasion before we are ready with helmets on our heads, prepared to race. We had 2 heats x 10 minutes, and it turned out to be as it usually is, close racing and tough driving. What’s a bit extra fun is that several passersby stop to watch, and there are even some filming! The time has come to head back to the track, with both the sprint race in F2 and the qualifying session in F1 on the agenda. On our way out, we stop by the roller coaster that was closed earlier. It’s still closed, but they are conducting test runs after the repair. We decide to wait for a bit to see if it opens, and it actually does shortly after! Some people rush past us towards the entrance, but we still manage to get on the first ride after the repair. The excitement rises a bit extra as we sit down, but we try not to think too much about it. The cars start moving before stopping at a light display. Five red lights light up one by one before all going out, and the roller coaster accelerates forward. 0-240 km/h in 4.9 seconds! It’s an incredible acceleration, simulating the experience of driving a Formula 1 car. The ride goes well, and the cars stop where they should. It was so amazing that everyone decides to go for another round. It does not disappoint!

On our way out, we pass by a restaurant that has hung up homemade Michelin signs outside. This is a restaurant serving authentic Arabic food, and despite its somewhat intriguing advertising, it has a very high rating on Trip Advisor. The whole group is starting to get hungry, so we decide to give it a try! We order dishes none of us can pronounce, and we are quite excited about what we’ll get. Generous portions arrive at the table, and the food tastes absolutely fantastic! Full and satisfied, we head back to the track for more action-packed racing.

Back at the track, the F2 sprint race proves to be exciting. There’s intense competition for the podium spots, and Dennis is one of those with a chance for a good result. It ends with a 4th place, still a commendable performance! The F1 qualifying session doesn’t offer as much suspense, but there’s a lot of impressive driving, and there’s something special about watching cars approach you at over 300 km/h. The weather is still perfect, and ahead of us is an outdoor concert at DU Arena with Shania Twain. The arena has a capacity of 40,000 people and is the largest outdoor arena in the region. Shania Twain still knows how to deliver, and there’s great energy throughout, even with some slower songs in between. Abu Dhabi airport is right nearby, and we count at least 25 planes flying directly over our heads during the 2 hours of the concert. Boeing’s 787-Dreamliner is easily recognizable, and considering GAN’s history with GEnx, it’s a bit more exciting when we see it fly overhead.

Sunday is set for the main races in both F2 and F1. This is the final race of the season, so it’s time to give it all! The F1 race offers a lot of action, with many overtakes and a few collisions. The 2nd place in the constructor’s championship is still undecided, so there’s actual competition on the track. Unfortunately, Mercedes-AMG Petronas comes out on top and beats Scuderia Ferrari by 3 points in this year’s championship. The race concludes with a grand fireworks display to mark the end of the season. After the race, some of us attend a concert with Foo Fighters, while others head back to the hotel. The evening ends with Arabic kebabs at a local restaurant, with a somewhat enthusiastic waiter.
