Etter mye løst prat om en tur for å se Formel 1, ble det det i april endelig bestilt tur, på privat initiativ, til Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2023 på Yas Marina Circuit. Nedtelling startet; 234 dager til avreise med en god gjeng kollegaer!

Torsdag morgen
Det er torsdag morgen. Temperaturen er -4 grader, men koffertene er pakket med sommerklær. 2 biler kjører innover fra Kongsberg til Gardermoen, og et fly er på vei fra Trondheim. Endelig er dagen vi har ventet på over et halvt år kommet! Kursen er satt sør-øst mot De Forente Arabiske Emirater. 7 timer på Emirates Boeing 777-300ER venter. Dette er verdens største tomotors jetfly, med GE90-115B motorer som vi leverer blant annet Booster Fixation Shroud og Cone Shaft til. En liten fun fact: Vi har også kontrakt på Tube Support Ring til denne motoren, men den blir produsert av en underleverandør som heter Mecachrome. Mecachrome er også leverandør av motorene som brukes i Formel 2, en 3,4 liter V6 med turbo som yter 620hk.

Timeplanen er fullstappet med racing både fredag, lørdag og søndag. Vi ankommer banen ca klokka 11 på fredag. Temperaturen er nå 29 grader, og det er strålende sol! Vi kjenner fort at dette ikke er temperaturer norske kropper er vant til å takle i det daglige. Det første som skal skje er trening for Formel 2. Her har vi faktisk med en nordmann i feltet: Dennis Hauger. For 4 av oss er dette første gang vi opplever F1 og F2 live, og for en lyd når de første bilene kommer kjørende forbi! Det er en spesiell raspende lyd, etterfulgt av en høyt og markant eksossmell når det skiftes mellom gir. Det er absolutt en fordel med ørepropper, selv om vi sitter oppe på tribunene med ganske god avstand til bilene som kjører på banen.

Etter F2 treningen er det et opphold før det skjer noe mer på banen. Fredagene i løpshelger er vanligvis ganske rolig, med lite tilskuere tilstede. Vi benytter da muligheten til å bli litt kjent med området rundt banen, og kommer blant annet over «Pit stop practice». Her skal lag på 3 konkurrere om å bytte 1 hjul på en F1 bil på kortest mulig tid. Her prøvde alle seg utenom Magnar, som fikk gleden av å være kameramann. Bestetiden ble til slutt 4,4 sekunder for å skru og ta av hjulet, sette på og skru fast et nytt et. Dette er ca dobbelt så lang tid som F1-teamene bruker. Vi snublet også innom kjøring med F1 simulator. Her fikk vi ingen trening, kun rett på løp mot andre deltagere. Dette gikk også relativt greit, med GKN-ansatte på 3, 4, 5, 6 og 8. plass av 13. deltagere.

Dagen ble avsluttet med F1 trening og F2 kvalifisering, hvor «vår egen» Dennis Hauger endte opp med 6. startspor for søndagens hovedløp. Absolutt ikke et dårlig utgangspunkt! Vi reiste tilbake til hotellet, hvor vi valgte å spise på hotellets italienske restaurant. Maten var god og porsjonene små, og kvelden toppet seg med at Kenneth sine penger nærmest løp ut av lommeboka i det han bestilte seg en GT til 100 «gærninger», noe som tilsvarer ca 300 norske kroner. Vi var alle enige om at det hadde vært en bra start på turen.
Lørdag hadde vi bestemt oss for å dra på fornøyelsespark, nærmere bestemt Ferrari World. Målet for dagen; Kjøre verdens raskeste berg og dalbane. Ved åpning var denne dessverre stengt grunnet tekniske problemer, så vi tuslet rundt og kikket på noen av bilene fra Ferrari sin storhetstid i F1 som var tilbake i årene 2000-2004. Samtlige mobiltelefoner fikk en god del flere bilder å ta vare på, og gutta var nesten stumme av beundring der vi gikk rundt med store øyne. Vi kommer oss omsider videre, og til alles store overraskelse er det faktisk en innendørs gokartbane i fornøyelsesparken! Felles for alle som er på tur er jo at vi er med i bedriftsidrettslaget i gokart, så her trengs det ingen overtalelse til før vi står klare med hjelm på hodet og klare for å kjøre. Vi kjører 2 heat x10 minutter, og det blir som det pleier å bli, tett fighting og tøff kjøring. Noe som er litt ekstra moro, er at flere som går forbi blir stående å se på, det er til og med noen som filmer! Banemannskapet synes også det er underholdende, og klapper og ler når vi kjører forbi. En veldig artig opplevelse, og noe helt annet enn å kjøre utendørs som vi er vant til.

Det begynner å nærme seg tiden for å bevege seg mot banen igjen, både sprintløp i F2 og kvalifisering i F1 står for tur. På vei ut går vi innom berg og dalbanen som var stengt. Den er fortsatt stengt, men de holder på med testkjøring nå etter reparasjonen. Vi velger å vente litt for å se om den åpner, noe den faktisk gjør kort tid etter! Det er noen som løper forbi oss på vei til inngangen, men vi kommer likevel med første tur etter reparasjon. Spenningen stiger litt ekstra når vi setter oss ned, men vi prøver å ikke tenke for mye på akkurat det. Vognene begynner å bevege på seg, før vi stopper opp ved en lystavle. Her tennes 5 røde lys i tur og orden, før alle slukker og berg og dalbanen skyter fart fremover. 0-240 km/t på 4,9 sekunder! Det er en helt utrolig akselerasjon, som skal simulere det å kjøre Formel 1 bil. Turen går bra, og vognene stopper der de skal. Det var så rått, at alle blir med på enda en runde. Den skuffer heller ikke!
På vei ut går vi forbi en restaurant som har hengt opp hjemmelagde Michelin skilt utenfor. Dette er en restaurant som serverer autentisk arabisk mat, og som tross noe spennende reklamering har en veldig god rating på Trip Advisor. Hele gjengen begynte å bli sultne, så dette må vi prøve! Det bestilles retter ingen av oss klarer å uttale, og vi er mildt sagt spent på hva vi får. Det kommer rause porsjoner på bordet, og maten smaker helt fantastisk! Stappmette og fornøyde setter i kursen mot banen for mer actionfylt kjøring.

Tilbake på banen viser sprintløpet i F2 seg å bli spennende. Det er lenge kniving om pallplassene, og Dennis er en av de som har muligheter til å få et godt resultat her. Det ender med en 4. plass, men likevel godt levert! F1 kvalifisering byr ikke på like mye spenning, men det er mye bra kjøring, og det er noe helt eget ved å se biler komme mot deg i over 300 km/t. Det er fortsatt upåklagelig vær, og foran oss venter utendørskonsert på DU-Arena med Shania Twain. Arenaen har en kapasitet på 40 000 personer, og er regionens største utendørsarena. Dama vet fortsatt hvordan man skal levere varene, og det er bra trøkk hele veien, selv med noen litt roligere sanger innimellom. Abu Dhabi airport ligger rett ved, og vi teller minst 25 fly som flyr rett over hodene på oss de 2 timene konserten foregår. Boeing sin 787-Dreamliner er veldig lett gjenkjennbar, og med tanke på GAN sin historie med GEnx er det såklart litt ekstra stas når vi ser den fly over oss.
Søndag er det duket for hovedløp i både F2 og F1. Dette er siste løpet i sesongen, så her er det bare å satse alt! F1 løpet byr på mye action, det er mange forbikjøringer og noen få sammenstøt. 2. plassen i konstruktørmesterskapet er fortsatt ikke avgjort, så her er det faktisk reell konkurranse på banen. Dessverre trekker Mercedes-AMG Petronas det lengste strået, og slår Scuderia Ferrari med 3 poeng i årets mesterskap. Løpet avsluttes med et stort fyrverkeri for å markere sesongens siste løp. Etter løpet drar noen av oss på konsert med Foo Fighters, mens andre drar til hotellet. Kvelden avsluttes med arabisk kebab på en lokal restaurant, med en noe overivrig kelner.
