Some have wondered what sets HSE apart from HR. Although there are many differences, the common ground is that both functions revolve around people. The collaboration between the two departments allows us to achieve more together.
Being an HSE Coordinator is about coordinating regulatory requirements, GKN requirements, and risk assessments across the entire company. Collaboration with all functions is key to creating a safe workplace.

From parts to safety:
My transition from an operator to an HSE Coordinator marked a significant change. From handling parts, I now focus on ensuring that those working with parts and machines do not harm themselves – it’s my top priority. I have a passion for working with people, and I love assisting everyone from leaders to operators in finding safer and better solutions.
As an HSE Coordinator, I have the opportunity to influence decisions and find solutions to ensure the safety of everyone at GAN. With support from HSE Manager Siri Hessen and Safety Manager Egil Kjørsvik, I work on everything from issuing ID cards to administering visits to GAN.

From identification to continuous adaptation:
Risk assessments form the cornerstone of HSE work. This is not just a routine we follow but a necessity mandated by Norwegian authorities and GKN. Risk assessment involves identification, evaluation, management, and, most importantly, continuous monitoring and revision to adapt to constant changes.
I also follow up on reported hazards and handle reporting related to the environment, reported hazards, and safety alerts. Collaboration and prevention:
Collaboration with service providers is also part of my role. Conducting HSE courses, managing paperwork, and opening access for a new year are among my responsibilities.
Communication is exciting for me, and I vary the use of different channels. Face-to-face meetings are crucial to ensure the message reaches everyone, and feedback is crucial for success. Without feedback from GAN employees, it becomes challenging to succeed.
Unfortunate events are something we strive to avoid, but if they occur, it requires thorough follow-up to ensure they do not repeat. Root cause analyses are conducted to learn, but I prefer to spend time on preventive work.
My preferred use of time includes being in the workshop, meeting employees, facilitating HSE courses, and providing more expertise in areas such as lifting and hot work.

Safety and well-being
As an HSE Coordinator, one must ensure that HSE rules are followed throughout the company. Just as wearing a seatbelt is mandatory when driving, it is also necessary to follow HSE requirements to ensure our safety in the workplace. We are always open to discussions and input for improvements, but the requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE) are there to protect us. So instead of working against the rules, use your energy to find PPE that works for your workday – without challenging the company’s rules and requirements.
It is the people who make GKN a fantastic place. We are a big family, and I am motivated to ensure everyone gets home safely, so they can continue to do a fantastic job.

As our skilled Chief Financial Officer Martin Ramfjord always says: numbers are fun. It’s starting to rub off on me even though I am terrible at mathematics, but I see the value of being able to present good numbers. I want to advocate that HSE is also fun!
