In October 2023, GKN entered into a collaboration with the inclusive employment company, Eiker Vekst. The company provides laundry services for the workwear of approximately 185 GKN employees and has already proven to be a valuable collaborator.

A collaboration with Blåkläder

Eiker Vekst is owned by the municipalities of Drammen and Øvre Eiker, and GKN becomes their first customer in Kongsberg. Peter Cederlund from Blåkläder engaged Eiker Vekst on behalf of GKN in connection with the new agreement and speaks highly of the inclusive employment company from Mjøndalen. We got in touch with Eiker Vekst through the association Norske Vaskerier, of which Eiker Vekst is a member. We aim to collaborate with meaningful companies, and when we found Eiker Vekst, which is both local and engaged in important societal work, it was a perfect match. It’s significant to know that we contribute to enabling people who are struggling to do something meaningful. Smaller businesses also enhance service quality, meeting the strict requirements for handling clean and soiled laundry.

David, the managing director of Eiker Vekst, is proud of the collaboration they have established. We are incredibly pleased that GKN, through Blåkläder, has chosen a company like ours. It provides opportunities for people who have previously been on the sidelines to be part of something bigger.

Reducing exclusion

I like to say that we are a social entrepreneur, explains David. We exist to reduce exclusion in society, he continues. The purpose of Eiker Vekst is to create job opportunities for people in need of adaptation, both physically and mentally. We also aim to provide apprentice candidates with the necessary skills through special education and adapted learning methods. We assist people who have struggled with illness, language challenges, or, for various reasons, have not found their place in the workforce, David concludes.

One of our core values is to contribute to the local community, and the collaboration with Eiker Vekst gave us a good opportunity for this, says Cathrine, HR Business Partner at GKN. Eiker Vekst was chosen because they are a local supplier delivering the services we need at the quality we require. Additionally, this type of company is crucial for the local community, which we want to support – and we look forward to a fruitful collaboration, she concludes.

Creating a sense of achievement

“We make plans for competence and development around the employees,” explains Jan. When they learn a new task and pass a test, they receive a skills certificate. This can be done for tasks like laundering work clothes from Blåkläder, and we already have a few who have received these. Skills certificates contribute to motivation and a sense of achievement, and our employees are very eager to learn. Training is tailored to each individual worker, and many have several different skills certificates.

A trust-based Collaboration

The collaboration between Eiker Vekst and GKN is still fresh, and they are getting to know each other along the way. In the beginning, there is some start-up logistics. We need to figure out what the customer wants and what is most practical for us. It’s a collaboration that goes both ways, explains Jan. An adjustment made in this collaboration is that our employees do not need security clearance; this is only required for regular staff, as they function as authority figures. Environmentally Conscious – Systematically Implemented

Eiker Vekst places significant emphasis on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and has chosen numbers 4 (Quality Education), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 10 (Reduced Inequality) as their focus areas. Jan explains, “In addition to certifications, we also undertake initiatives to become more efficient and energy-saving. Our washing machines generate large amounts of hot water, and with the help of a heat exchanger, we can reuse the used water to heat up the water on the clean side. Normally, we conduct five cycles per washing machine (equivalent to five washing processes) per day, and the goal is for this method to increase the number of daily cycles to six. This provides significant energy recovery and, not least, increases productivity.”
